한페이지독서 - 페르난두 페소아, 시는 내가 홀로 있는 방식

시인의 눈과 마음을 가지고 태어나는 사람이 있다면, 시인으로 태어나지는 않았지만 깊은 사유를 통해 시인의 눈을 뜨고, 시인의 마음을 얻게 되는 사람이 있다고 생각합니다. 페르난두 페소아는 아마도 후자가 아닐까 싶은데요.

 

제가 좋아하는 시인을 떠올려보면,

전 세계인의 사랑을 받는 시인이죠. 칠레의 시인, 파블로 네루다.

그리고 미국의 시인이자 소설가인 찰스 부코스키.

그리고 우리나라의 시인인 천상병씨와 송기원씨 등이 있습니다.

 

페르난두 페소아는 저에게 시인이라기보다는 산문가이지만,

불안의 서에서 이미 산문과 시의 경계를 무너뜨린 작가라는 생각이 듭니다.

그의 글은, 어디까지를 산문으로 보고, 어디부터를 시라고 정의해야 할지 애매합니다.

‘불안의 서’ 자체를 기나긴 산문시라고 봐도 무방할 정도니까요.

 

시인은 대부분 스스로 시인이고 싶어 합니다.

시인은 대부분 자신을 시인이라 소개하고, 시인으로 불리길 원합니다.

하지만 페소아는 자신에게 부여된 시의 의미는 자신이 ‘홀로 있는 방식’일 뿐이라고 말합니다.

그는 그만의 고독의 시간을 통해서 그 무엇도 아닌 바로 ‘나라는 존재’가 되고자 애쓴 시인입니다.

 

시의 한 구절을 읽어보겠습니다.

 

‘나는 내가 배운 것을 벗어버리려 노력한다.

나는 내게 가르쳐준 기억의 방식을 잊으려 하고,

나의 감각들에 칠해진 물감을 긁어내려 하고,

나의 진짜 감정들을 열어젖히고,

나의 포장을 풀어버리고 나라는 존재가 되려 한다.

~한 줄 생략~

자연이 생산해 낸 인간적인 동물인 나.‘

 

사실 세상의 모든 글을 쓰는 사람들의 투쟁은 ‘온전한 내’가 되는 일에 있는 것 아닐까 하는 생각이 듭니다. 하지만 세상에서 가장 쉬워 보이는 것이 바로 ‘내가 되는 것’이고, 또 가장 어려운 것 역시 ‘내가 되는 것’이 아닐까 싶습니다.

이런 명제에 대해 페소아는 ‘사물들의 경이로운 진실’이라는 시에서 이렇게 말합니다.

 

‘완전해지려면 존재하는 것만으로 충분하다.’

 

저 역시 이 대목에 동의합니다. 저 또한 ‘만물의 모든 것이, 존재하는 것으로 이미 존재의 목적을 이룬 상태’라는 글을 쓴 적이 있습니다. 또 시인은 이렇게 말합니다.

 

‘때로는 바람이 지나가는 걸 듣는다.

그리고 생각한다. 바람이 지나가는 걸 듣는 것만으로도

태어난 가치가 있구나.‘

 

나라는 존재와 또 나와 동시에 존재하는 주변의 존재들의 가치가 어울려 모든 존재들이 완전한 상태에 이른다는 시인의 철학이 느껴집니다.

사실 우리는 무엇을 이루거나 무엇을 하고 있기 때문에 가치를 지니는 존재들이 아니죠. 엄마에게 아기는 그저 아기인 그 상태로 엄마에게 모든 기쁨과 행복을 주는 존재이고, 태양은 불타고 있는 그 상태 그대로 지구의 모든 생명체를 살아가게 하는 어마어마한 가치를 지녔지만, 실제로 태양은 자기가 뭘 하고 있는지 따져보지 않고 그저 존재하고 있을 겁니다. 세상의 모든 아기들이 세상에 태어났기 때문에 그저 살아가고 있는 것처럼 말이죠.

 

그래서 이 시집에서는 이미 완전한 가치를 지닌 채 존재하는 존재들에 대한 작가의 애정이 구석구석 짙게 드러납니다.

 

‘어쩌면 오늘이 내 인생의 마지막 날’ 이라는 시의 한 대목을 읽어보겠습니다.

 

‘어쩌면 오늘이 내 인생의 마지막 날.

오른손을 들어, 태양에게 인사한다.

하지만 잘 가라고 말하려고 인사한 건 아니었다.

아직 볼 수 있어서 좋다고 손짓했고, 그게 다였다.‘

 

네. 이 시는 실제로 시인이 죽던 날 남긴 시라고 합니다.

 

이 시집, ‘시는 내가 홀로 있는 방식’ 안에는 작가의 세계관이 구석구석 선명하게 담겨 있습니다. 신에 관한 생각, 인간에 대한 생각, 자연에 관한 생각, 그리고 삶에 관한 생각들.

 

‘시는 음악 없이 노래하는 것’이라는 그 자신의 말처럼 페소아는 단 한 마디의 배경 음악도 없이, 단 하나의 음표도 없이 오직 활자로만 이 한 권의 시집을 완성해갑니다.

이 시집은 아름다움만을 노래하는 시집은 아닙니다.

이 시집은 노래로 가득 차 있지만 동시에 생각으로 가득 차 있기도 합니다.

 

‘축복 받은 섬들’이라는 시에 나오는 한 구절로 이 시집의 소개를 마칠까 합니다.

‘파도 소리에 들려오는 목소리 중에

바다의 목소리가 아닌 것이 무엇인가?‘

 

이 구절을 읽으면서 문득,

삶이 남기는 그 모든 시시콜콜한 자취와 흔적 중에

삶이 아닌 것이 과연 무엇일까?

라는 생각을 해봤습니다.

[Fernando Pesoa, The way I'm alone.]

 

If anyone is born with the eyes and the heart of a poet, I think there is one who is not born a poet, but who opens the poet's eyes through a deep reason and wins the poet's heart. Fernando Pesoa is probably the latter.

 

When I think of my favorite poet,

He's a poet loved by people all over the world. Pablo Neruda, a Chilean poet.

And Charles Buchowski, an American poet and novelist.

And there are Korean poets, Chun Sang-byung and Song Gi-won.

 

Fernando Pesoa is more of a prose writer than a poet to me.

I think he's already a writer who broke the boundary between prose and poetry in the book of anxiety.

His writing, looking at how far in prose, is unclear where to define poetry.

It is safe to say that the book of anxiety is a long prose poem.

 

Most poets want to be poets themselves.

Poets mostly introduce themselves as poets and want to be called poets.

But Pesoa says the meaning of poetry given to him is just the way he's holed up.

He's a poet who tried to become nothing but a 'nate being' through his time of solitude.

 

Let me read a passage from the poem.

 

'I try to take off what I've learned.

I try to forget the memory that you taught me,

He tries to scrape the paint off my senses,

Open up my real feelings,

Unpack my packaging and try to become a nation.

omit one line.

I, the human animal that nature produces.‘

 

In fact, I suspect that the struggle of the writers of all the world is in the work of being a "whole-hearted person." But what seems to be the easiest thing in the world is being me, and the hardest thing is being me.

This is what Pesoa says in his poem, 'The Wonderful Truth of Things.'

 

'To be complete, what exists is enough.’

 

I agree with this point. I also wrote, "Everything is in existence, and it has already achieved its purpose." And this is what the poet says.

 

Sometimes I hear the wind passing by.

And think. Just hearing the wind go by.

It's worth being born.‘

 

I can feel the poet's philosophy that all beings are in perfect condition because the country matches the values of existence and the surrounding beings that exist at the same time.

In fact, we're not valuable beings because we're doing something or because we're doing something. For a mother, a baby is just a baby, and it's all joy and happiness for her, and the sun has a tremendous value in keeping all life on the planet alive as it is on fire, but it's actually just there, not counting what it's doing. It's like every baby in the world is born, so it's just living

 

So this collection of poems reveals the author's affection for beings who already exist in full value.

 

Let me read a poem entitled "Maybe today is the last day of my life."

 

'Maybe today is the last day of my life.

Raise your right hand, and say hello to the sun.

But I didn't say hello to say goodbye.

I could still see it, so I gestured yes, and that was it.‘

 

Yes. This poem is actually written on the day of the poet's death.

 

This collection of poems, "The Way I'm Alone," clearly contains the author's worldview. Thinking about God, thinking about man, thinking about nature, and thinking about life.

 

As he said himself that poetry is about singing without music, Pesoa completes this single volume of poetry only in type, without a single word of background music, without a single note.

It's not just about beauty.

This collection of poems is full of songs, but at the same time it is full of thoughts.

 

I'd like to end the introduction of this collection with a phrase from the poem "Happy Island."

"One of the voices heard in the sound of the waves,

What is not the voice of the sea?‘

 

Suddenly, reading this passage,

Of all the dreary vestiges and traces of life.

What is not life?

I've been thinking.
